Las Cuevas Ambrosio

Several thousand years before Columbus got here, native tribes inhabited this island.  Not far from the marina are the Cuevas Ambrosia, where there are roughly 47 pre-historic drawings in both red and black pigment.  Most are geometric shapes, with many instances of 3 or 4 concentric circles which are meant to provide protection.  It is clear to the archeologists that these caves were used for rituals, both by the original inhabitants, and by the slaves who were imported to Cuba for the sugar plantations.












There is at least one drawing, however, which could easily give rise to the idea that space men visited here.




The caves were carved out of the sandstone and limestone by the meltwater from the last ice age, and there are many openings in the ceilings, often with tree roots dropping through in search of water.
