This week marked the official beginning of the college football season. I think I've mentioned before about how serious they are about football here. Roy and Edith, who are docked across from us, have mounted a 50" flat screen on the dock, which Roy says only plays Alabama University games. There are two teams in the state - Alabama and Auburn, and we were urged very early in our stay here to 'pick a side'. As most of our neighbours seem to be Alabama fans, we decided it would be prudent to support them, too.
To kick-off the season, Roy and Edith hosted a party on the dock. They supplied the BBQ pork (what we know as pulled pork), and the rest of us provided baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, etc. And, of course, there was lots of beer to make sure no one got thirsty. (Are you noticing a theme here?)
Michael and I knew that everyone would be wearing the team colours, and we decided we, too, had to pay homage as the price of admission to the party. So off we went to the local Walmart. We were greeted with cheers and applause as we made our entrance - mostly due to Michael's choice of attire!!
Everyone brought deck chairs and found space to set them up, stadium like, across the dock. Every time Alabama scored, boat horns sounded throughout the marina (we weren't the only party in the marina). And somewhere, out in the darkness, was a lone supporter of Michigan State who got to blow his horn only once. Poor thing - his team took a real beating.
The bugs drove Michael and I inside at about half time, but most of the rest of them stayed for the whole game.
Again, great food, great friends, and great fun!!
